I was 22 years old and my 12-year-old sister had the flu and came to me to for help in finishing her art project. I resisted at first, but finally caved in. I had not painted since high school and was nervous of the out come. Four hours later her painting was done and the creative flame was ignited.
I attended the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2005. Upon completing my Fine Arts and 2D Design Certificates, what had begun as a hobby grew into a passion.
Urbanscapes are a large part of my work. I’m often downtown so naturally the city, buildings, people and bustling environment influence me. The contrast that is visible in the urban landscape and cityscapes between people, architecture, shadows and light largely inspire my works. The basis of my work begins with photography. The camera is a great tool and allows me to record my experiences and thoughts instantly while allowing me to revisit them at my choosing. I then have the ability to make connections with the images I have collected and choose any number of paths until I reach my final outcome.
I often work with mixed media to create layers and elements of visual interest. I frequently use a geometric style of composition and lean towards achromatic works. The works are often transferred to canvas or wood panel. The urbanscapes we live in are not flat or still. They are constantly moving and evolving so I feel mixed media helps me represent this didactic relationship to the viewer.
My internal battle with my introverted nature and trying to thrive in an extroverted culture is visible in some of my pieces. I am a quiet, introspective and a rather reserved person; my photography and paintings represents those feelings. The mood of my work can be reflective and isolating. I am asking the viewer to connect with the work and to engage in their own thought. Whether it be sensory visceral connection or a fleeting memory that is reignited I hope they walk away in reflection.
